(NIR)VANDELS
The VANDELS survey is an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey designed to build a sample of high-signal-to-noise ratio, medium-resolution spectra of galaxies at redshifts between 1 and 6.5. The sample comprises &simeq 2000 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts with ultra-deep (up to 80hr) rest-frame optical spectroscopy. VANDELS has been successful in measuring the chemical, ionising, outflow, and physical properties of star-forming galaxies. The survey is described in the following survey papers: McLure et al. (2018) , Pentericci et al. (2018). and Garilli et al. (2021).
The NIRVANDELS survey is an extension to the VANDELS observations of galaxies at z \simeq 3.5, providing complementary rest-frame optical spectroscopy to the exisiting VANDELS rest-frame FUV spectroscopy.
\alpha-Enhancement
In Cullen et al. (2021) and Stanton et al. (2024), NIRVANDELS was used to simultaneously derive the oxygen and iron abundances for a sample of 65 star-forming galaxies at z &simeq 3.5, finding evidence of ubiquitous alpha-enhancement across the full sample. In Stanton et al. (2024) I developed chemical evolution models using these abundance ratios to test different outflow scenarios, finding a mass-dependent trend in outflow efficiency which could simultaneously explain the abundances of oxygen and iron in these systems.
